Hello Friends,
Three -year degree programs have existed for years, but have you heard about many of them? No, why not? Hmmmm, let's think about this. With private college tuition fees increasing significantly over the last ten years, (5% a year adds up) colleges have been reluctant to discuss the three- year options since one year less removes a lucrative revenue stream. At the same time, students have been increasingly more likely to extend their years of post-secondary studies. Many students often taken six years to complete a four- year degree. So should we be calling it a six-year degree?
However, why not the three-year route? Taking one year less to complete your studies isn't that complicated to do. Even if the option isn't identified on your campus, there are ways to accomplish the goal of degree completion in three years.
You may need to squeeze in extra classes or take a summer course or two, but the important point to remember is that three years instead of four is an option for you. You will need to be savvy about your course selections, registration and be vigilant about your academic planning. Letting your college advisor know your academic goals early during your freshman year is also essential. However, many public universities as well as private universities are launching the option knowing that fiscally savvy students are reshaping education.
Here are a few examples, American University in DC has a three-year "Global Scholars" program. Students complete 45 credits each year including study abroad, and graduate one year early with a BA in international studies.
Bates College in Maine has offered three-year degree programs since the 1960's.
Nearly 20 private colleges have added the three-year options since 2008. Public universities are also jumping on this trend with Wisconsin and Ohio slated to have accelerated options by 2014.
You would save one year of tuition and fees and start working in your career a year earlier. The net savings are significant.
Think about it.
