PARENTS, HOW TO TEACH DECISION MAKING SKILLS.
Hello Friends,
Who makes the decisions in your family? Who will make the college decision? You, the parents or your child? It is my job to help you make the best decisions, but frequently it is evident that you son or daughter is incapable of making a decision and has limited problem-solving skills.
Problem-solving skills are probably the most important skills a young adult can possess in life.
College choice is your child's decision. Of course, there are parameters that must be adhered to such as cost. other than that, the student should be able to make his/her own choice. Resist the urge to tell your child which college to select.
Students are scared about college, worried that they will make the wrong decision, will be unhappy with their choices and not be successful in college. Parents would do best to express empathy about the difficulty of the pending decision.
A good mantra for a parent is "Having to choose a college is a difficult task; I know you will make a good decision."
Showing empathy and encouragement goes a long way in this process.
I hear many parents describe a child who exhibits no interest in the college process. Usually the parents are expending more energy working and worrying about the admissions process than their child.
Early in a child's life, she learns that her mother will do all the worrying and work for her As a result, the child, young adult, learns that everything will be taken care of by her parent. Why worry, mom is or dad is worrying and taking care of business. Let them figure out what needs to be done.
One of the best ways to curb this pitfall is the let your son or daughter solve his/her own problems, figure our their own solutions with the little things as well as the big things such as college admissions.
This is a challenge, and it is never too late to change your course.
